Biblical Oils- Frankincense and Myrrh

gold-frankincense-myrrhMany people know the story from the bible about the gifts brought to Jesus by the three wise men in celebration of his birth, which include gold, frankincense and myrrh. I’ve always wondered about the last two- how could plant extracts possibly be equivalent to gold? Let’s take a look at the use of these famous essential oils, both in the past and present.

Both frankincense and myrrh were used as medicinal substances in ancient times, according to both written and archaeological evidence from the time of Jesus as well as in ancient China and Egypt. These oils come from sap that oozes out of the cut bark of the Boswellia and Commiphora trees and is very fragrant in both resin and oil form. By the time of Jesus, many physicians including Hippocrates had documented these substances’ antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, and even recommended them as an antidote for some poisons. Due to their many medical uses and the difficulty of producing them, frankincense and myrrh were likely worth more than their weight in gold; therefore, the gifts of these oils by the wise men were just as valuable as the third gift given at Jesus’ birth, gold.

Today, frankincense is used by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, used in aromatherapy to promote feelings of relaxation, and can help reduce skin imperfections and promote healthy cellular function. Myrrh is a common ingredient in natural toothpaste, as it has long since been regarding as beneficial for gum disease, and can help promote a smooth looking complexion and feelings of emotional well being.
