Combining Traditional and Modern Medicine

diffuserVanderbilt Hospital in Tennessee has successfully used oils to help their nurse staff reduce stress and increase energy when working long hours in the emergency room. In 2011, a group of nurses got permission from the hospital to use the citrus oils grapefruit, wild orange, lemon and lime aromatically through diffusers. Through their experiment, the staff showed a decrease in work related stress by 30%, a decrease in feeling overwhelmed by 20%, an increase in the ability to handle stress by 45%, and an increase in perceived energy levels by 45%. The hospital has diffused these oils for several years and has to have a report of an adverse side effect. The experiment’s designers feel that the decrease in stress and increase in energy means that their patients will receive better care from nurses who are more alert and better equipped to deal with emergency situations.

This study and the continued use of essential oils in the hospital show promise that traditional medicine such as essential oils can be combined with modern medicine in a way that allows people to receive benefits from both. Many doctors have begun to see the value in certain essential oils and are willing to add daily oil usage to their patient’s health regimen. We recommend talking to your doctor if you have specific health concerns, as we have several general practitioners on our team that recommend a combination of oils and prescriptions for their patients. If oils can truly help people heal faster, then we feel like everyone should allow themselves to try to feel better in the most natural way possible.
