Essential Adventure- Outdoors with Essential Oils

outdoors and oils

Looking for a way to have outside fun without using harsh chemicals? Check out these ideas for do it yourself essential oil recipes and suggestions to keep your family healthy and natural when adventuring in the great outdoors.

Natural Insect Repellent- try clove, lavender, lemongrass, eucalyptus, peppermint, rosemary, thyme or white fir, or try an essential oil Repellent Blend that contains many of these oils. Rather than using harsh and toxic chemicals that smell terrible, take advantage of various plants abilities to protect themselves from insects in nature by applying essential oils every few hours when adventuring outside. *FYI- your skin absorbs everything you put on it in under a minute, so think before you spray!*

Cool off- apply peppermint to your pulse points such as wrists, feet and neck to experience a cooling sensation on those super hot days. Peppermint is also great to reduce the symptoms of a tension headache while you are on the go. Some people find peppermint a bit intense, so try it first before you rub over a large area. If you are using it on your kids, you may want to dilute it with fractionated coconut oil (half and half).

DIY skin soothing sprays

  • In a spray bottle, add 40 drops lavender, 15 drops peppermint, 5 drops roman chamomile and 3 ounces of water; shake and mist over traumatized skin.
  • In a roller bottle, place 2 drops of myrrh and 2 drops of lavender for every tablespoon of fractionated coconut oil. Gently rub onto irritated or peeling skin.

Bug Bites- Keep melaleuca and lavender on hand to reduce the itchiness of various outdoor irritants such as mosquito bites, spider bites, tick bites and blisters. If applying these oils neat stings (or if using on children), add a little fractionated coconut oil to dilute them.
